Below is the transcript of a letter, written June 22 1808, from Joseph Grant to his brother Thomas Grant concerning the estate of their brother Christopher. Philadelphia June the 22 1808
Dear Brother
I arrived from Charleston yesterday ware I heard of the death of our Brother Christopher who departed this life the 16 of March 1808 at the island of Dominica. I saw the Capt. that brought the brig home he delivered me a inventory of our brothers clothing I likewise cald on Mr Eeringham but got no intelligence from him. I ? wife cald on Mr Calve? the man who and the brig but cold git no satisfaction from him only that he had the trunk and clothes and would not deliver them to me we thought a power of attorney as to any thing else I could not find out respecting his business for Mr Calve was always drunk when I cald to see his from sum of his friend I was told that he was a good deal in debt thare(?) from others I was told that Eeringham was in debt to him likewise a ?wright had the amont of tweleve ? of coffee in his hands but if that is the case Mary will never get anthing from him for he is worth nothing. I shall sail for Charleston again the 26 of this month and I will do my ? to gain all the information I can but in the meantime Mary had better get a power and send on to meet me hear by the time I arrive hear again as I am in one of the Packets I shall be backwards ?and every month and I will indiver to git what I can for him I wold advise him to secure what little property she has for ? of sum ? for they are grate roges. In Carolina? I saw a letter that Mr Calve? had from Mary to our brother ware she ? that ? ? him from africa he should get to Baltimore Mr Calve? semes to stick on that a good deal indeed that semes something odd to me that he should go there when he could not come to Charleston I think she has maid a mistake he must have meant ? if that is the case she had better contradict it in his letter to mee Received your letter of the 10 by ? ware you inform me of your illness which I am (illegible line) me as soon as possible my wife and I ?
