Below is the transcript of a letter to Christopher Grant concening the embargo of 1794. An image of the original letter is also available.

Custom House Boston March 30 1794

Sir Congress have laid an embargo on all ships and vessels in the ports of the United States wether(sic) already cleared out or not, bound to any foreign Port or place for the term of thirty days, and have directed the Officers of the Customs to with hold all registers and refuse clearance. Your Register you have received, and also your clearance, which cannot now avail you, my duty therefore impels me to ask you to return those papers by the carrier here of, who waits on you to receive them, thereby you will evince your readiness to comply with the injunctions of your Country, and save me the painfull task of reporting you to the Commander in Chief of this Commonwealth who is requested to give his aid to a punctual execution of the Same.
